Wondering where to get started? Here are a few of my local sources for craft materials.
SCRAP (School and Community Action Program)
Utterly freaking amazing non-profit. Think crafty thrift store, but cooler. Fabric, plastics, art supplies, framing material, yarn, you name it! However, if you see it and like it, buy it then because chances are it will be gone by the time you come back.
Great little shop in Montavilla that carries yarn, findings, notions, vintage fabrics, patterns, and more. Terrific source for inexpensive knitting needles. Mom & daughter co-owners Ruth and Rome are very friendly and chatty.
Very hit or miss, but when paying for materials by the pound, it is definitely worth checking out from time to time. Especially when you are looking for sweaters to felt! So far, my best find there has to be the Return of the Jedi bedroom curtain that became throw pillows in our TV room, as well as a spiffy Darth Vader tie for Aaron.
Excellent source for leather, tools, and other cool stuff like antler buttons that you generally can’t find at box stores.
My new favorite source for jewelry findings. Locally owned with competitive prices and very friendly staff.
Swapping craft supplies with friends is also a great way to refresh your stash. I’ve been fortunate enough to be the recipient of some very fun stuff when friends are cleaning out closets. “Hey, this looks remotely crafty! Let’s give it to Jenn.”
