In March of 2000, I went to a freaking amazing show at the Roseland featuring The Presidents of the USA and Sir-Mix-A-Lot, touring together as sUBsET. As Mix explained in an article, “We do music because we love it. Subset is four men who have seen the evils of the record business and were able to escape, asses still intact. Four men who left on their own terms. Four men re-born, true to the grassroots, and freed from the shackles of pop music.”
That night I picked up a sweet T-shirt and went home humming their catchy tunes. In addition to singing some songs they were individually known for, they had a collection of all new songs. Really fun and very different from their usual stuff. They had promised a CD coming out soon, but one never materialized and the project faded into obscurity. I’ve consoled myself with the few MP3′s in existence, including a few from live shows.
MIX: “Check it out. I noticed a lot of people going, what the fuck did Mix do?”
BALLEW: “What the fuck did the Presidents do?”
MIX: “My question is this… how the fuck can I live in Seattle and not do this?”
I still wear my concert-T pretty frequently, especially since the word SUBSET in large letters on a t-shirt is really amusing to people who work with databases. In all the time I’ve worn it, no one has ever acknowledged that they knew what my shirt meant.
Until tonight.
Aaron and I were doing the self-checkout at Freddy’s when an employee came up and said, “Wow! You know who sUBsET is? I didn’t make it to the show but my friend did and he said it was totally through the roof!!! I can just imagine… Chris Ballew and Mix! Did they ever release an album?”
After I told him there was no album but MP3′s could be found by the enterprising individual, he proceeded to talk my ear off about sUBsET and a few other bands who do wild innovative stuff. I tried to help Aaron with the groceries and give this guy the indication that I had shopping to finish, but he didn’t get the hint. Aaron said the guy looked bummed when he noticed that I had a boyfriend, but I missed that hint. Food bagged and heading out the door, the guy persisted, even after I tossed a “Nice talking with you. Byeeeeee!” over my shoulder.
“Oh, no worries. I was heading out to my car myself,” as he follows us out towards the parking lot, yammering about bands I will probably never check out. Once we finally parted ways, I wanted to chuckle and ask, “What the hell was that?” but I figured he was probably still within earshot.

Signs I’ve been to quite a few Chris Isaak performances…

By the time I took my seat, I could pick out the women who would be invited to dance on stage with him during one of the final numbers.

I knew when he would swap “Portland” for “San Francisco” when he sang San Francisco Days.

When the overture from West Side Story plays, the show is about to start!

I’ve heard the trailer park story before… and noticed when he left a particularly racy part out.

The most popular songs for the couples in the audience to kiss and canoodle to are *always* Wicked Game and Wrong to Love You, although the entire show seems to get folks pretty randy.

When he left the stage and people started leaving, I knew to stick around because he’d be back in moments wearing a mirrored suit.

I’ve heard the “We’re gonna play the songs we know for a few hours, then get started on the songs we don’t know… maybe some ABBA, maybe some Blue Oyster Cult” line before… and it still makes me laugh.

He usually talks about women coughing up sequins the next morning after a night with him, but he makes it sound so appealing!

When he asks people who are in “loving committed relationships” to raise their hands in the air, Chris tells the guys in the band to only pick from the women who *don’t* have their arms in the air.

More random notes from Thursday’s show:
Chris and the guys of Silvertone were great — lots of energy. Just have to remember that sometimes the gals in the front row are just as entertaining to watch as the band is, and even funnier when they are pulled up on stage. There was even a mother-daughter team, with the mom completely putting the moves on Chris! The front-row women were much less skanky than the women at other shows I’ve been to like Reno and Seattle… Seattle in ’02 was the worst with the drunk gal at the signing booth begging Chris to return the bra she threw on stage during the show. LOL

We had great seats, but I misjudged where he’d be going out in the audience and he wound up the balcony instead of in the orchestra where we were seated (and I thought he would be). Although considering how many fan-type interactions I’ve been lucky enough to have with him, including him dancing on my table during a lounge show, I really have nothing to complain about.

He sounded really good, and he told many jokes in bad taste that are half the fun of the show, although the funniest joke was unintentional. Chris was making local references as part of a story, and he pronounced Willamette as “Willa-met” The audience, already close to tears from laughing so hard, kind of lost it at that point.
There were two catty bimbettes sitting behind us who insisted on talking through the entire show, although they got a little quieter after I told them they were being disruptive. It was sort of like watching the show with an unwanted running commentary.

“Oh, he is so cute! I’d take him home and eat him for breakfast!”
“Girl, no, we need to take the whole band home with us!”
“I wonder if he’ll sing that song off of [insert name of popular overcommercial recent album here]?”
“This is my first time seeing him in concert – this is pretty cool.”

They literally talked like this through the *whole show.* I hope it’s her last, or if they go again that they not talk through the whole thing. I had half a mind to give her the keys to my car so they could listen to the music on CD and talk without bothering anyone.

He sang Going Nowhere, which is one of my favorites, but I’m still waiting to hear him sing Like The Way She Moves or I’m Not Sleepy during a show. Since they are non-radio play tracks off of Speak of the Devil, the chances are slim. I love to hear him sing, but I would have been perfectly happy if he hadn’t sung anything from his most recent album — all the songs from that album are pretty lackluster. Loved that they balanced the show out with an acoustic set in the middle, including songs from Baja Sessions. Heard official confirmation that he is releasing a Christmas album — with four original tracks! How cool is that?

When they were winding up the show, he told us what a great audience we were and that he wanted to stick around and sing for us for a while, then slid into a fabulous acoustic rendition of Forever Blue. I think someone told him in his ear bug that the show was over because it wrapped up seconds after he finished the song, with a very hurried thanks to all the members of the band. This was a bummer because they usually end shows with a rocking rendition of Diddley Daddy, which also has the potential to contain wickedly funny stories.

Went home wanting to watch my boot-leg copies of The Chris Isaak show until the sun came up so it wouldn’t seem like the concert was over. *sigh* For the record, this is the eighth show I’ve attended. No, I’m not a fan-girl at all.

Sorry, we’re using it when we climb Mt. Rainier this weekend.

Sorry, we’re using it when we go to the biker rally this weekend.

What do you want to do with it? You don’t camp.

When I coated myself in bug repellent to keep the mosquitos at bay, Aaron‘s response was:

Listening to the shrieks and screeches of small children and babes in arms echoing off the walls of the cave is the most effective birth control I have ever encountered

I will return to the Mt. St. Helens area again soon because:

We were unsuccessful in channeling Harry Truman and would like to try again.

I’m curious to see if the potato chips have different stories on the bags the next time I swing by the One Stop.

I can’t get the “Sack Your Trash” song out of my head.

This weekend Aaron and I journeyed to the Geek Mecca of Seattle’s new Science Fiction Museum. Pilgrims flocking to the holy site are denied the opportunity to touch such sacred relics as the chair of Captain Kirk and the helmet of Darth Vader, but the thrill of being so close to pieces of geek magic is still pervasive.
I told him about a week ago to have his bags packed for a mystery trip this weekend. We left PDX just shy of 6am (I wanted to arrive at the museum when it opened!) and got to Seattle around 9am. It was sort of a meandering route to get there because I didn’t want him to guess where we were going. After we checked into our hotel, we started walking towards Seattle Center. We followed the monorail track, which led us to the front door of the museum.
“Okay, this is our final destination. Surprise!!!”
I think he was speechless for a minute. He had heard that such a museum was in the works, but had no idea that it was open. Score! I had been hoping to completely surprise him — mission definitely accomplished. The museum was super cool. More than a third of the exhibits came from the personal collection of Paul Allen. At one of the displays dominated by placards that read, “Courtesy of the Paul Allen Family Foundation” I overheard someone say, “Boy, he spent his money wisely” in a very green with envy fanboy sort of way. Besides, if you set up a non-profit foundation to manage your collection, doesn’t that make your acquisition of sci-fi related costumes, props, and first edition books tax-deductible? Oooooh… now there’s a loophole! I keep telling Aaron that he should be managing and making new acquisitions as an agent for the PAFF collection because I can’t think of anyone better suited for the job.
We had a great time staying at The Moore Hotel, a fun and funky old school sort of place. It was clean and very convenient to all sorts of great stuff. Being two blocks from Pike’s Place was awesome. Staff was super-friendly, and the other guests were a kick.
Saturday night we dined at Cafe Bengodi in Pioneer Place. We had a great little table on our own patio with a great vantage point for people watching. I enjoyed the Gamberi, which was a fresh pasta dish with prawns, mandarin oranges, brandy, cream, and tarragon. Aaron enjoyed the Puttanesca, another fresh pasta dish with anchovies, vermouth, basil, tomatoes, and carrots. We shared house-made tiramisu for dessert. Food to die for, very friendly service — I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town.
Sunday morning we enjoyed breakfast from The Crumpet Shop at the counter with an even more interesting vantage point.

Some of my volunteer assignments over the years have been interesting, but this is the first time I’ve ever been a character companion. The official job title was handler, but I think companion sounds much nicer.

The gig: A character meet and greet with a group of nursery school kids
The assignment: Get the character in and out of costume, escort the character into the event, assist with photo ops, and so on.

It went really well. The suit was a bit of a challenge at times, because once the costume was on there was padding at the bottom of the leg that looked like it belonged elsewhere. A bit trying to get all of the paws on, too. In the box with the suit came a list of regulations stating that the character must not speak, can not sing or dance, and should refrain from crude gestures like lifting its leg. It can not appear with any other characters, which is a bit of a shame since the kids were asking about the other characters from the show.
The children were very well behaved, although a few of them had difficulty staying quiet during both story books that were read. One of them nearly broke my heart because he is very attached to the character, and when it was time for the character to leave the boy ran after and hugged the character tightly so he couldn’t leave. We found out later that boy had just lost his father and is going through a transitional period where he’s still not sure what happened to his dad.
I had originally volunteered to be the person in the suit, but I am sort of glad I was assigned to be the handler instead. I don’t deal with heat very well and my friend in the costume was sweating bullets by the time the event was over. I did get to try part of it on, and I think it looks pretty good on me. Also got a shot from inside the head. That’s another reason they need a companion – the mask takes away peripheral vision, and they need help knowing where to walk.

It was so wonderful to see Pablo walk across the stage today to get his diploma — I am very proud of my Spanish brother. We spent all day with him and his family. This is the first trip to the United States for some of them, and it has been great fun introducing them to American things.

After the ceremony, we wanted drinks and a bite to eat, so we took them to a sports bar so they could experience a “typical” American bar. I don’t think twice about onion rings, poppers, or mozzarella sticks, but all of these things were new to the family and had to be explained.

Only a few people in our group are fluently multi-lingual, and the rest of us communicate in broken sentences, wild gestures, or ask for translation. The toughest part for me has been speaking slowly, because nearly all of us can gain a rudimentary understanding of what is being said if it is said slowly enough. Mas despacio, por favor!

We had some fun with Pablo’s very charming cousin, Ruben, who nearly injured his neck at least once looking at pretty girls. He asked me about good ways to introduce yourself to women, and the first thing that came to mind was, “Hey, baby!” He repeated it with an emphasis that sent the entire group into a fit of laughter. I then explained that it probably wasn’t the best phrase to use, and suggested a few alternatives.

I’ve been helping out as a tour guide, even teaching them useful American slang for items such as the “oh shit handle” you hold onto in the car when the driver takes turns a bit too sharply. Gerwald was a bit too enthusiastic on the curves when driving up the Mt. Rose Highway to Tahoe, so the term was immediately applicable.

Spending all of this time with la familia has cemented my decision to return to Madrid in the fall. Money is tight, but I’ve decided that no matter what, I’ll figure out a way to get there. Also on my to do list: buckle down and take that Spanish course this summer. My vocabulary isn’t too bad when it’s been refreshed / in use, but my sentence structure is horrible. It would be best if I am more fluent by the time I go.

It would have been nice to get closer than the twenty-fourth row, but last time I sat front-row at a CI show I was overrun by rude trashily dressed women in their mid-forties desperate to throw their undergaments at Chris, which prompted him to exclaim, “Oooh! Now we can play dress-up on the bus!” One of these women even asked for her bra back at the autograph session! So this time I think it might be safer with some distance between my seats and the stage. I’d rather enjoy the show from a bit further away than have to spend the whole night being pissed and bitchy at women who are pissed and bitchy when they don’t get picked to dance onstage during the final number.
Besides, he sang to me and danced on my table a few years ago. It can’t get any better than that.

1. Pack the car with snacks, bottled water, and tunes
2. Turn off the phones
3. Roll the dice to determine which direction to go
4. Get in the car and drive
5. Take whichever road or stop at whatever roadside attraction strikes our fancy
The dice said south, so Aaron and I headed out…
Portland >> Oregon City >> Wilsonville >> Woodburn >> Mt. Angel >> Silverton >> Silver Falls State Park >> Sublimity >> Stayton >> Scio >> Jefferson >> Albany >> Corvallis >> Philomath >> Waldport >> Newport >> Depoe Bay >> Lincoln City >> Tillamook >> Seaside >> Astoria >> Clatskanie >> Vernonia >> Scappoose >> Sauvie Island >> Portland
When we got home the odometer registered almost exactly 500 miles, and we had driven through nine different Oregon counties: Multnomah, Clackamas, Marion, Linn, Benton, Lincoln, Tillamook, Clatsop, and Columbia.

Silver Falls was a great place to have a picnic.

Attempted the covered bridge tour in the “Covered Bridge Capital of the West,” although we were only able to get to two out of the five. I took a wrong turn that landed us on a dirt road with a lot of No Trespassing signs that looked suspiciously like a scene from Wrong Turn. At this point Aaron mentions that a lot of horror stories he’s written start out like that, which freaks me out even more so we hightail it back towards civilization.

Took a nap on the grass in an Albany park. Got some great pictures of a pioneer cemetery with the film camera.

Stayed in an old-school touristy beach motel in Waldport. Sipped mariner cocktails and ate seafood at the Galley Ho! restaurant. This was definitely a weekend for double entendres and bad jokes… ate out at the Galley Ho and saw signs for free cats, chicks for sale (Why buy the chick when you can get the pussy for free?), a wood sale, Bob’s Small Engine Shop, and a few more that slip my mind. You could say it put a naughty spin on the usual road trip games, but they were the ones posting all the suggestive signs.

Drank coffee at the Devil’s Punchbowl…

A lot of this trip really made me wish I had my own little place on the coast.
We stopped in Seaside to play a few rounds of Fascination, and we won three times between the two of us! Part of my quest was to find a walk-up stand for whole crab like I’ve seen on the bayfront in Newport, but there were none to be found! The closest was a sit-down restaurant that served crab legs, but it was Alaskan Crab (???on the Oregon Coast???), so we moved on.

We spent some time wandering one of my favorite out of the way spots. Very awesome place to explore.
Drove through Sauvie Island on the way home hoping to find an open fruit and vegetable stand, but no luck. The warm weather left us with a craving for BBQ, so we finished off the weekend with a hearty rib dinner at Clay’s Smokehouse and Grill. Dinner was amazing, but they ran out of key lime pie a half hour before we arrived. *sniff*
I really hope we’re able to keep up this tradition of disappearing for one weekend a month. We’ve got lots of places on our list — the challenge is finding the time!
